01 Nov Walkers are Welcome Get Together 2021
Delegates from Winchcombe attended the Annual Walkers are Welcome Get Together, held in Kington, Herefordshire. The three day event included discussion groups, a chance to network, talks and general meeting. Kington has some similar characteristics to Winchcombe e.g. sits in a valley with long distance paths and a National Trail passing through it.
Some of our highlights were:
a 13.5 mile walk from Knighton to Kington along Offa’s Dyke Path, led by Rob Dingle, Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail Officer,
an address about countryside access challenges by Kate Ashbrook, WaW Patron and General Secretary of the Open Spaces Society,
a talk by the ‘guerilla’ geographer Dan Raven Ellison who has started the Slow Ways project and is looking for innovative ways to use footpaths.
These events are always fun and educational and they are a great way to network with other WaW towns from across Great Britain. Being part of a national network is like being in one big family, we meet up with people who have become friends over the years and make new friends. We always come away buzzing with new ideas and we are already looking forward to attending next year’s event in Alton, Hampshire.
