River Coln Trail

The River Coln Trail is a new 33-mile waymarked trail following this pleasant understated Cotswold river from its source to its confluence with the River Thames. The trail starts  from Winchcombe and leads you to the source of the Coln, through some of the finest unspoilt countryside in the Cotswolds to its confluence with the Thames at Inglesham, near Lechlade-on-Thames.

The trail follows close to the river along paths and lanes through some quiet backwaters.

Kate Ashbrook, Patron of Walkers are Welcome and General Secretary of the Open Spaces Society: There is a great joy in walking by water and, having sampled stretches of the route, I know that the River Coln Trail is a pure delight.

The route from Winchcombe heads up the Sudeley valley towards Charlton Abbots. At the head of the valley the route straddles two water catchment areas. The water courses to the north flow down through Winchcombe into the River Isbourne to Evesham where it joins the Avon and then the Severn to flow into the Bristol Channel. In front of you, the River Coln flows south through Bibury, Coln St Aldwyns and Fairford to meet the Thames, where it flows east through London to the North Sea.

Some circular walks start from small hamlets and parking is restricted.  We do politely request that vehicles are parked near to where described in the guide book and entrances to properties are kept clear.

River Coln Trail: The Official Guide

An official guide is available to accompany the route. The guide has clear instructions along with maps showing paths, refreshment stops and transport information. The linear route is split into nine sections allowing the route to be walked as circular walks.
