The 9 mile circular walk leaves Winchcombe past the site of the old abbey. We pass the Saxon St Faith’s Church and Hailes Abbey with it’s even older little church nearby. Then back to Winchcombe with a last look at an old pilgrimage hostelry. Pilgrimage lies at the heart of Winchcombe’s story: the legend of St. Kenelm brought pilgrims to Winchcombe’s Benedictine Abbey in the Saxon Period. With the foundation of Hailes Abbey in the 13th century, the presence of a vial of Christ’s blood ensured that this area became a Medieval Pilgrimage ‘hotspot’. Join us on a walk of historical discovery. Bring a picnic lunch.
